Meet Our Irrigators: Schubugs

With the Adelaide Test against the West Indies wrapping up last weekend we thought we would introduce another of our unique clients Schubugs, who are breeders of live Crickets!

Timothy & Zachery Schubert are a father and son combination who created Schubugs and started breeding crickets in 2018. Zachery is an Australian Beach Volleyball champion and has a Bachelor of Nutrition. His father Timothy has been farming citrus fruits in the Riverland for over 20 years.

Tim and Zach Schubert

Timothy and his family had been farming in the Loxton region for over twenty years, however recent droughts had forced them to look to alternative farming. Tim originally got the idea to breed and sell crickets from his time in Vietnam.

Crickets are high source in protein and Vitamin B12 and are eaten in many parts of the world.

Schubugs currently supply the local and interstate pet food market, as snakes, frogs, rats and lizards all eat crickets of different sizes. However, Zach is looking to expand into human consumption and enter the alternative food market with his brand Grub, which currently offers a small, bespoke range of food made from crickets.

The Schubert property produces grain and citrus which is utilised as feed for the crickets, with only natural ingredients used for the cleaning and sterilisation of the cricket enclosures.

Storm water is collected to recycle water and used egg cartons are collected and used in the breeding and shipping of the live crickets.

The entire Schubugs business is self-sustainable and environmentally friendly.

Waterfind are proud to support the Schubert family in diversifying their farming business.

Who knows in the near future, Timothy & Zachery’s crickets may be on the menu of your favorite restaurant near you??
