About Fat Farmers and Active Farmers

Fat Farmers

Fat Farmers: Rural Health Initiative began in 2012 on South Australia's Yorke Peninsula, when three farmers started going to the gym after moving on from team sport. They quickly saw the benefits that regular exercise had on their health and wellbeing. What began as a joke about the name soon became a conversation starter and, over time, a recognised rural health movement. You do not have to be fat, or even a farmer, to take part.

Active Farmers

Active Farmers was founded around the same time in New South Wales by Ginny Stevens in response to the mental health challenges facing regional Australia. The idea was simple: bring communities together through regular group fitness classes in a fun, social setting that recreates the benefits of team sport.

Coming together

In 2026, the two charities came together while continuing to operate under both brands. Today, Fat Farmers and Active Farmers support more than 80 groups across Australia, with plans to expand even further into regional and remote communities.

What Waterfind is doing

At Waterfind, we work with farmers and regional businesses every day. This partnership reflects our commitment to supporting the communities that sustain Australia's agricultural sector.

When eligible customers trade water through Waterfind, they can choose to donate through the dedicated Fat Farmers campaign page. Waterfind will then match donations up to $50 per trade, helping every contribution go further.

Funds can be directed to Fat Farmers, Active Farmers, the Health Hub, or a specific group of choice. These donations help support community events, free health checks, and the ongoing costs of local groups delivering valuable programs in rural areas.

Donations can be directed to where they are needed most, including Fat Farmers, Active Farmers, the Health Hub, or a specific local group.

Visit the Fat Farmers website to find your nearest group, then contact the local Champion or Trainer to learn how to join in.

You do not need to be a farmer, especially active, or a certain level of fit to take part. The focus is on connection, movement and supporting one another.
