Water Market Outlook - August 2021

Waterfind CEO, Tom Rooney, was invited to discuss forthcoming drivers for permanent and temporary water markets at the national ABARES webinar held on 5 August.

The ABARES Water Market Outlook August 2021, published on 3 August, provides initial forecasts for water prices in 2021-22 water season for the major trading zones in the southern Murray-Darling Basin (sMDB), along with analysis of the various supply and demand drivers currently affecting the sMDB water market.

Mr Rooney explained that over the past 20 years there has been greater market participation in temporary trading in the Murray-Darling Basin especially during dry years when allocations are lower.

He also explained that the amount of water carried over into the current season is the highest we've seen since the 2017-18 irrigation season. This coupled with higher allocations has resulted in higher quantities of water supplied to the markets and the potential to lower water market prices.
